Longboat Key and Neighboring Islands
These are the coconut palm dotted tropical barrier islands that bougainvillea-lovers
dream of. To the west you find the sugar sand beaches of the Gulf
of Mexico and its clear, warm, turquoise waters. To the east, a mangrove
island archipelago frames the view of Sarasota’s skyline in
the distance across Sarasota Bay. Nearly perfect winter weather lures
flocks of snowbirds, vacationers and spring breakers during the seasonal
population spike. Around May, the population descends and these islands
return to their normal sleepy summer state.
Longboat Key Tennis, Golfing, Fishing
Summer is the quiet season when a riot of oleander and crape myrtle
blooms, tee and tennis times are plentiful, tarpon and snook run
in the passes and along the beach. On the islands and along the
coast summer temperatures seldom rise above 92º. Cooling afternoon
thunderstorms clear fast — leaving humidity like a Chicago
summer, but cooler with a sea breeze through the palms. Avid golfers,
boaters, loafers, sailors, readers, tennis players, fishermen and
even some workaholics call these islands home. Some call it a second
home, some a vacation home, some a home to retire to sometime in
the future. For us lucky few its simply home — year round.
The Performing Arts
Minutes away, in nearby Sarasota you’ll find a full social
season of the arts in winter and early spring. A more relaxed champagne
and sandals island lifestyle pervades summer. Longboat Key is the
perfect seasonal retreat, second home or tropical base from which
to enjoy retirement. Imagine your immersion in nature so profound
it becomes a distraction, a daily reminder you actually live in
a tropical paradise. This can be your daily reality, your island
experience.

Longboat Key Geography
Longboat Key and her adjacent islands of Anna Maria (including Homes
Beach and Bradenton Beach), Bird, Jewfish, Lido and St Armands keys
make up a 20 mile long strip of barrier islands in the warm Gulf
of Mexico, just off the coast of Sarasota and Manatee Counties.
Longboat forms the western shore of Sarasota Bay, home to many national
and international sailing competitions.
Longboat Key is divided lengthwise by Gulf of Mexico
Drive, this two-lane scenic highway runs its 10.8 mile length. The
island spans both Manatee County (Bradenton) to the north and Sarasota
County (City of Sarasota) to the south. Home to a year round population
of about 8,000, it virtually triples during the winter with the
return of the snowbirds attracted by its first class tennis and
golf facilities, world renowned beaches, boating waters and fishing
grounds.

Healthcare, Shopping, Tennis, Town Hall, Churches and Temples.
South Longboat Key Homes & Neighborhoods
The southernmost properties consist of larger condos, penthouses
and single-family homes clustered along the beaches, around the
golf courses, canals and marinas. They are in closest proximity
to the cultural advantages of Sarasota, the shopping of St Armands
Circle and Avenue of the Flowers.
North Longboat Key Homes and Neighborhoods
The northern section is less dense with more private Gulf of Mexico
beachfront and waterfront estates, many canal front single-family
homes, smaller beach front and bay front condominium buildings.
Village of Longbeach, Longboat Key,
Florida
The north is also home to the historical settlement of Longbeach
(not Long Beach) where wild peacocks roam the quiet streets of restored
cottages and bungalows set in mature tropical gardens. Many overlook
Longboat Pass, mangrove islands or front on the ICW. This is an
eclectic community of individuals, home to writers and artists,
where the art center flourishes and the voluntary Village Association
regularly brings the residents together to sustain the strong community
spirit.
